Bill Riley’s Iowa State Fair Talent Search

Time: 2-5:00pm

For the sixth year in Johnston, the Bill Riley Talent Search will be conducted at the Johnston Chamber of Commerce Green Days Festival on Saturday, June 18 from 2 to 4 pm
and admission is free. With a few changes in age divisions and talent requirements, it is open to Johnston School District area students primarily and will be judged by music professionals Jody White, Brent and Anne Peterson.  A winner from the Junior and Senior divisions will advance to the 51st Iowa State Fair Bill Riley Talent Search Competition in August from which a senior grand champion wins a $7000 scholarship.

Two categories of competition are determined by age at the time of winning in the Johnston June 18 show: Juniors 6 to 14 years and Seniors age 15 to 21 years. A third group for exhibition only are: Sprouts age 2 to 5 years. Performance categories include: *Vocalists: classical, country or contemporary; *Dancers: tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, acrobatic or baton; *Instrumentalists: classical or contemporary

One to five persons may perform in each 3-minute act, but contestants may only appear once in this show. For the first time ever, pre-recorded, single-instrument accompaniment without backing vocals will be allowed for vocalists. A piano accompanist is not counted as a performer. DVD/cassette accompaniment is allowed for dance acts, baton, etc. Drums and amps are discouraged due to the 1-minute set-up time. Rock bands or similar musical groups are not permitted, nor are professionals.
Contestant rules and further details will be sent to you upon receipt of your request. Talent and age categories are limited.

Top winners receive these cash prizes from Charter Bank:

Seniors- $100 first place; $80 second; $60 third

Juniors- $50 first place; $40 second; $30 third
